The plan for this paper is as follows. In Sect. 2 the age-structured pair formation model under consideration is stated and reformulations appropriate for the study of persistent age-distributions are introduced. The main results on existence and nonexistence of persistent age-distributions are derived in Sect. 3., while Sect. 4 contains a discussion of several special cases -- in particular the case of constant rates -- and some biological interpretations.
