An abelian \((v, k, \lambda)\)-difference set \(D\) is a \(k\)-subset of an abelian group \(G\) such that the list of differences covers every non- identity group element exactly \(\lambda\) times. Even for ``small'' parameter triples, it is not yet known whether difference sets can exist or not. The case of putative (96, 20, 4)-difference sets in \(\mathbb{Z}_ 4^ 2\times \mathbb{Z}_ 6\) was one of these small open cases. In the paper under review, the authors construct such a difference set. Recently, this example has been generalized to an infinite family by J. Davis and J. Jedwab.
