We prove that, for a non-discrete locally compact Abelian group \(G\), the group algebra \(L^1(G)\) contains a non-trivial semigroup, analytic on the right-hand half-plane and bounded on the line \(1+it\) \((t\in\mathbb{R})\), if and only if \(G\) has a compact open subgroup. This solves, for \(G\) Abelian, a question raised by J. Esterle. Some partial results are also given in the non-Abelian case.
