    The author considers the equation \[ {\partial \over \partial t} (\nabla ^2 \psi ) + \beta (y) {\partial \psi \over \partial x } =0 \] arising in the analysis of large-scale atmospheric processes. He applies the Lagrange manifolds formalism to study the problem near caustics, e.g. in critical regions.
