Let \(R\) be a prime ring with extended centroid \(C\) and \(\rho\) be a nonzero right ideal of \(R\). In the first main result of the paper the situation when \(C\)-independent derivations \(d\) and \(\delta\) of \(R\) are such that the commutator \([d(x),\delta(x)]\) is central for every \(x\in\rho\) is characterized (under some mild additional assumptions). As an application of this result on derivations, it is shown that every centralizing additive map \(f\) on \(\rho\) must be of the form \(f(x)=\lambda x+\mu(x)\), \(x\in\rho\), where \(\lambda\in C\) and \(\mu\colon\rho\to C\), except when \([\rho,\rho]\rho=0\). This extends a result of the reviewer [in J. Algebra 172, No. 3, 764-786 (1995; Zbl 0827.16024)].
