This is an exciting article on the different attempts leading to the solution of the d-bar Neumann problem, which was formulated by D. C. Spencer around the middle of the 1950's. In the first part the author gives a survey on the Hodge theory and the theorem of de Rham. The second part describes the approach of Garabedian and Schiffer, who took the Bergman kernel as a starting point. Then the author sketches how he succeeded to solve the problem comparing his work with contemporary attempts of Kohn, Morrey and Spencer. In the final part the author explains how his \(L^2\)-estimates for the solution of the d-bar equation can be used for Ehrenpreis' fundamental principle, for the approximation of functions on totally real submanifolds, for the solution of convolution equations, for the construction of analytic functions with prescribed zeros and for the approximation of plurisubharmonic functions.
