This paper presents a method for finding presentations of Grothendieck groups of abelian categories. As with other methods, the presentations are constructed from known presentations. The basis of the method is a coherent pair (\({\mathfrak A},{\mathfrak B})\) of additive categories in which idempotents split over a commutative ring (a coherent pair of additive categories is a pair of coherent categories \({\mathfrak B}\subseteq {\mathfrak A}\) such that \({\mathfrak B}\) is contravariantly finite in \({\mathfrak A})\). The method is used to study \(K_0\) of algebras and orders. The results are used in studying the kernel and cokernel of the Cartan map. In particular, methods for investigating when the Cartan map is a monomorphism and when the cokernel is torsion are discussed.
