The author gives a sketch of the early career of Hermann Minkowski during the period 1880-1885, woven around the contents of a newly discovered letter from Heinrich Weber to Richard Dedekind, now kept with the Nachlass of Emmy Noether. (Weber describes two works of Minkowski's which were sent to him by Minkowski's teacher and asks Dedekind to suggest further problems suitable for such a student.) After discussing Minkowski's prize-winning work of 1883, the author appends some further letters of Weber (to Lipschitz) proving the originality of the work and refuting any suggestion of plagiarism. (These letters are apparently published here for the first time.)
