The monotone method is extended to discrete finite difference equations which correspond to a class of parabolic or elliptic boundary value problems. The paper treats problem formulation, definition of upper and lower solutions, and construction of monotone sequences. Examples include enzyme kinetics, chemical reactions, population growth, and thermal ignition. Numerical results illustrate the main features of the method. A comprehensive list of references closes the article.
