Die Gleichung dritten Grades \[ \text{(1)}\quad ax^3-3bx^2+3cx-d=y \] hat für zwei Werte von \(y\), bzhw. \(q_1\) und \(q_2\), zwei gleiche Wurzeln \(r_1\) und \(r_2\). Bezeichnet man durch \(s_1\) und \(s_2\) die entsprechenden dritten Wurzeln, so lässt die Gleichung (1) sich auf die folgende Gestalt bringen: \[ \text{(2)}\quad 4\left(\frac{2x-s_1-s_2}{s_1-s_2}\right)^2-3\left(\frac{2x-s_1-s_2}{s_2-s_2}\right)=\frac{2y-q_1-q_2}{q_1-q_2}, \] welche eine einfache geometrische Darstellung der Abhängigkeit zwischen den complexen Grössen \(x\) und \(y\) zulässt. Man braucht nur, wenn \(\psi=\psi_0+\psi_1i\), zu setzen \[ \begin{aligned} x=\tfrac12(s_1+s_2)+\tfrac12(s_1-s_2)\cos\psi,\\ y=\tfrac12(q_1+q_2)+\tfrac12(q_1-q_2)\cos3\psi\end{aligned} \] und in der \(x\)-Ebene \(s_1\) und \(s_2\), in der \(y\)-Ebene \(q_1\) und \(q_2\) als Brennpunkte für Systeme von confocalen Kegelschnitten zu nehmen, um eine geometrische Deutung der betreffenden Gleichungen zu erhalten.
