Let X be a smooth n-fold of general type. The purpose of this note is the study of the canonical ring \(R=\oplus^{\infty}_{d=0}H^ 0(X,dK_ X)\quad of\) X. In particular under the assumption that \(| K_ X|\) has no base-points and dim \(\phi\) \({}_ K(X)=\dim X\), where \(\phi_ K\) is the canonical map, the author gets results about the generators and relations in the various degrees of R. These results are generalizations of a theorem of Noether and the work of Enriques and Petri [see \textit{B. Saint-Donat}, Math. Ann. 206, 157-175 (1973; Zbl 0315.14010)]. The present paper is a supplement to a note by \textit{E. Arbarello} and \textit{E. Sernesi} [Invent. Math. 49, 99-119 (1978; Zbl 0399.14019)]. The techniques of the proof are similar to Castelnuovo's lemma and a vanishing theorem of Mumford, a proof of it is sketched as an appendix to the note. Examples for surfaces illustrate the results in an impressive way.
