The author shows that \(|(1-\chi(2)/2)L(1,\chi)|\leq{1\over 4}(\log q+2.818\dots)\) holds for any even primitive Dirichlet character \(\chi\) of odd conductor \(q>1\). This supersedes all previous results by the author and has applications in particular to class number problems. The proof is elegant and simple and as in [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I, Math. 332, 95-98 (2001; Zbl 0981.11031)] relies on an integral representation of \(L(1,\chi)\); the main novelty consists in noticing that the imprimitive Gauss sum modulo \(2q\) is simply related to the primitive Gauss sum modulo \(q\).
