This paper on classical differential geometry studies the total (i.e. integrated over \(C\)) curvature of a closed curve \(C\) in three-dimensional Euclidean space. \(C\) is immersed in a surface \(M\) and is varied within \(M\). If \(C\) is critical with respect to its total curvature then the Gauss curvature of \(M\) vanishes on \(C\). Stability properties of such a critical curve \(C\) can be read from the second variation of the total curvature. The mathematical facts are interpreted in terms of a physical model proposed by Plyushchay. The catchwords in the title refer to that interpretation.
