The paper under review is intended as an update of a survey by \textit{B. Farb} et al. [in: Geometry, rigidity, and group actions. Selected papers based on the presentations at the conference in honor of the 60th birthday of Robert J. Zimmer, Chicago, IL, USA, September 2007. Chicago, IL: University of Chicago Press. 515--560 (2011; Zbl 1256.22008)] on cell complexes of non-positive curvature and their automorphism groups. It is a summary of five lectures given by the author at the MATRIX workshop `The Winter of Disconnectedness' in 2016. The paper touches on and examines a variety of topics including curvature of metric spaces and their isometries, lattices, symmetric spaces, graphs and trees and their automorphisms, tree lattices, polyhedral complexes and buildings, in particular right angled buildings, Kac-Moody buildings, and \((k,L)\)-complexes. It also compares analogous results for groups acting on trees, higher-dimensional complexes and Lie groups. For the entire collection see [Zbl 1394.00023].
