It is proved first that \(u\in V=H^ 1(\Omega)\) minimizes the functional \[ F(v)=(1/2)\int_{\Omega}| \text{grad} v|^ 2dx+\int_{\Omega}| v| dx-<f,v>\quad on\quad V \] iff it is a solution of the variational problem (V.P.): \(a(u,v)+(\beta (u),v)_ H=<f,v>\), \(v\in V\) where \(a(u,v)=\int_{\Omega}\text{grad} u. \text{grad} v dx,\beta (r)=-1\) if \(r<0\), \(\beta (r)=+1\) if \(r>0\), \(\beta (0)\in [-1,1],\) \(H=L^ 2(\Omega)\) and \(\Omega \subset R^ n\) is an open connected bounded subset with sufficiently regular boundary. Using known existence and uniqueness results concerning strong solutions of a perturbed variational problem, existence, uniqueness, continuous dependence on \(f\in H\) and some a priori estimates of weak solutions of (V.P.) are obtained. Moreover, using the finite element method, approximate solutions satisfying certain algebraic linear systems are obtained and a Jacobi type numerical algorithm for the algebraic system is described.
