The paper is devoted to the question of regularity of compactly supported refinable functions. The authors extend a fundamental result of \textit{I. Daubechies} and \textit{J. C. Lagarias} [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 22, No. 5, 1388--1410 (1991; Zbl 0763.42018)] to the general setting for arbitrary dimension, dilation and translations. They prove that a compactly supported refinable function of finite mask in \(\mathbb R^n\) cannot be in \(C^\infty(\mathbb R^n)\). Further, the authors establish some upper bounds on the regularity of compactly supported refinable functions.
