The monograph deals with the optimal real-time control of combined sewer networks. Chapter 1 is an introduction. Chapter 2 presents an accurate model and a simplified model of a sewer network. Available simulation tools for sewer networks are surveyed. The simulation program KANSIM for accurate models is described. Chapter 3 presents control design tools for flow control in sewer networks. The nonlinear discrete-time optimal control problem of sewer networks is formulated in Chapter 4. Its solution is given in the form of testing and evaluations of well-known algorithms and using the receding horizon with updating inflow predictions and initial conditions. Chapter 5 presents the formulation and the solution of a sewer network control problem using multivariable feedback control. The linear quadratic discrete-time formulation is selected. Its use requires a number of problem simplifications. Chapter 6 is an application example of a particular sewer network. Chapter 7 presents simulation results when applying both nonlinear optimal control and multivariable feedback control within 3 different scenarios. Conclusions and future research are discussed in Chapter 8. This monograph presents a self-contained comparative synthesis of a centralized sewer network flow control problem based on two selected approaches: nonlinear optimal and multivariable control. It is notable as the presentation of an extensive case study based on the particular sewer network. Such a global approach deserves further research. This excellent book is primarily addressed to practitioners as well as researchers in control and civil engineering working in sewer flow and wastewater treatment industry.
