    The author determines the Brauer characters of all the irreducible 7- modular representations of Held's sporadic simple group. The first part of the calculation uses standard methods (basically collecting projective characters by inducing up from \(S_ 4(4):2\) and other subgroups) to reduce to 8 possibilities. These calculations were done using the MOC3 system of Hiss, Lux and Parker. In the second part of the calculation, 7 of these possibilities are eliminated by investigating the structure of various tensor product representations. Here the author uses his results (proved elsewhere) on the non-associative algebra structure on the 50- dimensional representation. \{Remarks: (1) On line 5 of section 3, \(C_ b\) should read \(B_ c\). (2) On page 248 the author gives two definitions of ``self-dual'' which he says are equivalent. Unfortunately they are not. Moreover the one he actually uses is the wrong one. This is very confusing, although I do not think it affects the final result. Various intermediate results however will require ``self-dual'' to be replaced by ``orthogonal''.\}
