The authors employ the Ablowitz-Ladik scheme to a nonlinear evolution equation which is equivalent to the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The scheme maintains the main properties of the original equation. Numerical results show that the scheme admits a rather large time step. Using this way the standard AKNS system was solved by \textit{M. Ablowitz} and \textit{J. Ladik} [Stud. Appl. Math. 55, 213-229 (1976; Zbl 0338.35002)] and \textit{T. Taha} and \textit{M. Ablowitz} [J. Comput. Phys. 55, 192-202 (1984; Zbl 0541.65081), 203-230 (1984; Zbl 0541.65082) and 231- 253 (1984; Zbl 0541.65083)].
