The author studies properties of Toeplitz operators on the Hardy-Bergman space P 2(\(\mu)\) obtained as the closure of the polynomials in L 2(\(\mu)\), where \(d\mu (re^{i\theta})=(\pi)d\nu (r)d\theta\) with \(\nu\) a positive finite Borel measure on [0,1] having 1 in its support. The results obtained extend those of earlier authors in the case of continuous symbol on the unit disk using techniques of \textit{S. Axler}, \textit{J. B. Conway}, and \textit{G. McDonald} [Can. J. Math. 34, 466-483 (1982; Zbl 0452.47032)]. For example, the Toeplitz operator \(T_ f\) on P 2(\(\mu)\) with continuous symbol f is compact iff f vanishes on the unit circle. Also, if f is continuous on the closed disk, then the essential spectrum of \(T_ f\) is given by the image of the unit circle under f.
