Let \(PSL(2,{\mathbb{R}})=SL(2,{\mathbb{R}})/\{+1,-1\}\); PSL(2,\({\mathbb{R}})\) acts on the upper half-plane H. Let \({\hat {\mathbb{R}}}={\mathbb{R}}\cup \{\infty \}\) be the boundary of H. In this paper we prove that a closed subgroup G of PSL(2,\({\mathbb{R}})\) is amenable iff G leaves invariant a pair of points of \({\hat {\mathbb{R}}}\), or G fixes one point of H or \({\hat {\mathbb{R}}}\).
