Let L be the Lie algebra of a classical compact simple Lie group. In this paper the author shows how to construct pairs (A,B) of elements in L such that the Lie algebra generated by A and B is all of L. The construction is given in terms of the root system and depends heavily on an earlier paper of the author and \textit{P. E. Crouch} [Math. Control Signals Syst. 1, No.1, 31-42 (1988; Zbl 0658.93013)]. Unfortunately, the author does not repeat the definition of his central combinatorial object, the ``elementary root graph'', in this paper.
