Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, and A a finitely generated k-algebra of Krull dimension at most one. In this paper we study the ring of differential operators \({\mathcal D}(A)\) on A and obtain analogues of the main results of \textit{S. P. Smith} and \textit{J. T. Stafford} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 56, 229-259 (1988; Zbl 0672.14017)], where A is assumed to be a domain. For example we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for \({\mathcal D}(A)\) to be a direct sum of simple rings, or to be left or right Noetherian.
