Let \(C\) be a smooth projective curve of genus \(g\), let \(K\) be its canonical bundle and let \(L\) be any line bundle on \(C\). The Wahl map \(w_{L,K}\) sends the kernel of the multiplication \[ H^0 {\mathcal O}_C (L) \otimes H^0 {\mathcal O}_C (K) \to H^0 {\mathcal O}_C (L + K) \] to the space \(H^0 {\mathcal O}_C (L + 2K)\); when \(L\) is very ample and \(f_L\) is its associated embedding, then the cokernel of \(w_{L,K}\) is related with the deformations of the projective cone over \(f_L (C)\). Several results on this subject suggest that line bundles \(L\) for which \(w_{L,K}\) is non surjective become quite rare when \(\deg (L)\) increases and their existence in high degree implies restrictions on the geometry of \(C\). In this context, let \(C\) be a general curve of genus \(g > 8\) and define \(s\) to be the biggest integer \(\leq g/2\). The author proves that, when \(\deg (L) > 3s + 3\), then \(w_{L,K}\) is onto, unless the multiplication \[ H^0 {\mathcal O}_C (K - A) \otimes H^0 {\mathcal O}_C (L - A) \to H^0 {\mathcal O}_C (K + L - 2A) \] is non surjective for a general line bundle \(A\) of degree \(s + 2\) with \(h^0 {\mathcal O}_C (A) > 1\). Then he uses this result to prove that \(w_{L,K}\) is onto when \(L\) is general of degree \(> 3s + 10\) and it is onto for any \(L\), as soon as \(\deg (L) > 5s + 12\).
