For the purpose of investigating the ideal class group of a complex quadratic field, the author considers reduced ideals, primitive ideals and ambiguous classes of a complex quadratic order in an ideal theoretic setting. He gives ideal theoretic proofs of a sufficient condition for a primitive ideal to be reduced and also of the fact that there are at most two reduced ideals in any class and they are conjugates of one another if they exist.
