This paper aims at devising a numerical technique to calculate the electromagnetic loss in electric machine laminations. The mathematical formulation is standard and derived from Maxwell's equations, and the solution of the problem is obtained numerically by a combination of finite element and finite difference techniques. The importance of the proposed technique lies in the simplicity of the mathematical formulation which relies on the variational approach and the ability to take into consideration saturation and hysterisis effects. The usefulness of the proposed technique is confirmed by calculating the electromagnetic loss in an electric machine tooth and yoke cross sections.
