Block decoupling of linear systems over UFD's is studied in this paper by means of the algebraic approach. This approach uses various algebraic properties of the transfer matrices of linear systems. The main results gives characterizations of injective systems to be decoupled using the general factorization theory of transfer matrices over UFD's. Previous results of other authors on block decoupling may be derived as special cases of the results in this paper. An example illustrates the results obtained. The paper concludes with a discussion of some possible future problem to be investigated in the framework of the factorization theory.
