The authors show that every square matrix over a field is a product of three triangular matrices. For nonsingular matrices this result is a consequence of an earlier result of \textit{L. N. Vaserstein} and \textit{E. Wheland} [ibid. 142, 263-277 (1990; Zbl 0713.15003)].
