Let \(k\) be a number field and \(A/k\) an abelian variety. Let \(X\) be a subgroup of the Mordell-Weil group \(A(k)\). Let \(P\in A(k)\) and suppose that the reduction of \(P\) modulo a prime \(v\) is in the reduction of \(X\) modulo \(v\) for all primes \(v\) in a density one subset of the set of primes. Gajda asked whether this does imply that \(P\) is in \(X\). \textit{P. Jossen} and \textit{A. Perucca} [C. R., Math., Acad. Sci. Paris 348, No. 1--2, 9--10 (2010; Zbl 1219.11089)] and \textit{G. Banaszak} and \textit{P. Krasoń} [Acta Arith. 150, No. 4, 315--337 (2011; Zbl 1281.11061)] showed that the answer to this question is no, by producing explicit counterexamples, all of which are non-simple abelian varieties. In the paper under review it is shown that the answer to Gajda's question is yes under the extra assumption that \(A\) is geometrically simple. The proof relies on a study of certain 1-motives associated with \(X\).
