The paper deals with the topological rigidity of actions on compact connected metrizable abelian groups by groups of affine automorphisms, and the classification of translation actions up to orbit equivalence and topological conjugacy. Let \(G\) and \(H\) be two compact connected metrizable abelian groups. Given two actions of a discrete group \(\Gamma\) on \(G\) and \(H\) by affine automorphisms the author has a result on the structure of all \(\Gamma\)-equivariant continuous maps \(f:G\to H\); using the result sufficient conditions are described for \(f\) to be affine; in particular this is shown to hold if the \(\Gamma\)-action on \(H\) is expansive. Let \(G\) and \(H\) be as above and let \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\) be two one-parameter subgroups of \(G\) and \(H\) respectively. Then it is proved that the flows induced by them on \(G\) and \(H\) are orbit-equivalent if and only if there exists a continuous isomorphism \(\theta:G\to H\) and a \(c\neq 0\) such that \(\theta (\alpha (t))=\beta (ct)\) for all \(t\). It is also proved that topologically conjugate actions of a discrete group \(\Gamma\) on \(G\) and \(H\) by translations are algebraically conjugate.
