The authors investigate the system of difference equations \[u_{n+1}= \frac{a +cv_n}{u_n}, \qquad v_{n+1}= \frac{b + du_{n+1}}{v_n},\] and its perturbed system \[u_{n+1}= \frac{a +cv_n}{u_n}, \qquad v_{n+1}= \frac{b + du_{n+1}+\eta(v_n)^2}{v_n+\eta v_n}, \] with $n = 0, 1, 2, \dots$ where $a$, $b$, $c$ and $d$ are arbitrary positive real numbers, $\eta\geq 0$ and the initial values $u_0$, $v_0>0$. Such systems originate from the Lyness difference equation with period two coefficients. They find a dichotomy between the unperturbed and the perturbed systems, i.e., there are infinitely many initial conditions giving rise to periodic sequences with infinitely many different periods whereas all solutions of the perturbed system with $\eta>0$ are globally asymptotically stable.
