Let \(\phi: Y\to {\mathbb{P}}^ 1\) be a double covering, where Y is assumed to be an irreducible nodal hyperelliptic curve, all its nodes are ramification points and the characteristic of the base field is different from two. The author associates to \(\phi\) a pencil Q of quadrics in \({\mathbb{P}}^{2g+1}\), \(g=arithmetic\) genus of Y, so that the compactified Jacobian of Y is isomorphic to the variety R of all (g-1)-planes of \({\mathbb{P}}^{2g+1}\) contained in all quadrics of Q. Also the subvariety of R corresponding to the generalized Jacobian of Y is derived.
