It is well-known that the different realizations of the level 1 highest weight representations of the affine Lie algebra \(\hat{\mathfrak g}\) associated to a finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebra \(\mathfrak g\) depend on the choice of a Heisenberg subalgebra of \(\hat{\mathfrak g}\), essentially the analogue of a Cartan subalgebra of \(\mathfrak g\). It is also well-known that the Heisenberg subalgebras are parametrized by the conjugacy classes in the Weyl group of \(\mathfrak g\). In this paper, the authors carry out a detailed study of the case \(\mathfrak g={\mathfrak sl}_ n({\mathbb{C}})\), in which case the conjugacy classes are in one-to-one correspondence with the partitions of \(n\). The corresponding vertex operator constructions of the level 1 highest weight representations of \(\widehat{\mathfrak sl}_ n({\mathbb{C}})\) are described explicitly.
