A subgroup \(N\) of \(G\) is \textit{almost subnormal} if they are connected by a finite chain of subgroups whose every step is normal or of finite index. The minimal length of such a chain is the depth of \(N\).\par If \(D\) is a division ring with infinite center and \(n>1\), then every almost subnormal subgroup of \(\operatorname{GL}_n(D)\) is normal. However, the authors show that \(D^{\times}\) might have an almost subnormal subgroup, of any depth, which is not subnormal. Their example is a Mal'cev-Neumann division ring with respect to the countably generated free group.\par The main result is the following generalization of Cartan-Brauer-Hua's theorem: if a division ring \(D\) has infinite center, and \(K \subseteq D\) is a division subring invariant under conjugation by some non-central almost subnormal subgroup \(D^\times\), then \(K\) is central or equal to \(D\).
