    The author considers the singular boundary problem (1) \(- y''(t)+q(t)y(t)=f(t)\), \(f(t)\in L_ p(\mathbb{R})\), \(0<\varepsilon\leq q(t)\in L_ p^{loc}(\mathbb{R})\), (2) \(\lim_{| t|\to\infty} y(t)=0\), \(\tilde L_ p(\mathbb{R})=\{L_ p(\mathbb{R})\) for \(p\in[1,\infty]\); \(C(\mathbb{R})\) for \(p=\infty\}\). Let \(G\) be the integral operator \((Gf)(x)=\int^ \infty_{-\infty}G(x,t)f(t)dt\), \(f(t)\in\tilde L_ p(\mathbb{R})\), where \(G(x,t)\) is Green's function of the problem (1)--(2). The main result of this paper is the following theorem: The operator \(G:\tilde L_ p(\mathbb{R})\to\tilde L_ p(\mathbb{R})\), \(p\in[1,\infty]\) is compact if and only if \[ \lim_{| t|\to\infty}\int^{t+a}_{t- a}q(\xi)d\xi=\infty\hbox{ for every } a\in (0,\infty). \leqno (3) \] The author proves also that: 1. If \(p\in[1,\infty)\) then the problem (1)--(2) has a unique solution in the class \[ D^ 0_ p=\{z(t):z(t)\in W^ 2_{p,loc}(\mathbb{R})\cap W_ p^ 1(\mathbb{R}),\quad \lim_{| t|\to\infty}z^{(i)}(t)=0,\quad i=0,1\}. \] 2. If \(p=\infty\), then the problem (1)--(2) has a unique solution in the class \[ D^ 0_ \infty=\{z(t):z(t)\in C^ 2_{loc}(\mathbb{R})\cap C^ 1(\mathbb{R}),\quad \lim_{| t|\to\infty}z(t)=0\} \] if and only if the condition (3) is satisfied. 3. If \(p=\infty\), then the equation (1) has a unique solution in the class \[ D_ \infty=\{z(t):z(t)\in C^ 2_{loc}(\mathbb{R})\cap C^ 1(\mathbb{R})\}. \]
