This paper is devoted to the study of the multivariate quadratic spline functions on rectangular grids. The splines under discussion are continuous functions and piecewise quadratic in each variable. Error bounds and applications to shape-preserving approximation are also discussed. Techniques similar to those presented in the paper under review are developed in: \textit{Yu. S. Zav'yalov}, \textit{B. I. Kvasov} and \textit{V. L. Viroshnicenko}, ``Methods of spline functions'' (1980; Zbl 0524.65007).
