A boundary value problem for the second-order ordinary differential equation \(u''(t)= f(t, u(t))\), \(t\in [0,\pi]\) is considered. Classical and well-known results when \(f\) is continuous are extended to the case when \(f\) is a Carathéodory function. It is shown that a generalized upper and lower solutions method is valid, and the monotone iterative technique for finding the minimal and maximal solutions is developed.
