Endomorphisms of smooth projective 3-folds with nonnegative Kodaira dimension. II (Q2474980): Difference between revisions

Let \(X\) be a smooth projective variety admitting a surjective endomorphism \(f \colon X \rightarrow X\) that is not an automorphism. Such an endomorphism is called nontrivial. Then it is known that \(X\) is not of general type [\textit{Y. Fujimoto}, Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 38, No. 1, 33--92 (2002; Zbl 1053.14049)]. If \(\dim X =1\) then from the Hurwitz formula it follows that \(X\) is isomorphic to \(\mathbb{P}^1\) or an elliptic curve. In higher dimensions it is much more difficult to classify all varieties that admit a nontrivial surjective automorphism. The two dimensional problem has been completely solved by works of both authors. The algebraic case was treated in [\textit{Y. Fujimoto}, Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 38, No. 1, 33--92 (2002; Zbl 1053.14049) and \textit{N. Nakayama}, Kyushu J. Math. 56, No. 2, 433--446 (2002; Zbl 1049.14029)] and the non-algebraic in [\textit{Y. Fujimoto} and \textit{N. Nakayama}, Tohoku Math. J. (2) 57, No. 3, 395--426 (2005; Zbl 1088.32008)]. If \(\dim X=3\) and \(k(X)=0 \) or \(2\) then there exists a finite étale covering \(\pi \colon \tilde{X} \rightarrow X\) such that \(X\) is isomorphic to either an abelian 3-fold or the product \(E \times S\) of an elliptic curve and a smooth projective surface \(S\) with \(k(S)=k(X)\) [\textit{Y. Fujimoto}, Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 38, No. 1, 33--92 (2002; Zbl 1053.14049)]. This paper completes the classification of smooth projective 3-folds with non-negative Kodaira dimension admitting a non-trivial surjective endomorphism by treating the case \(k(X)=1\). In particular it is shown that a smooth projective 3-fold \(X\) with \(k(X) \geq 0\) admits a non-trivial surjective endomorphism if and only if there exists a finite étale Galois covering \(\tau \colon \tilde{X} \rightarrow X\) and an abelian scheme structure \(\phi \colon \tilde{X} \rightarrow T\) over a variety \(T\) of dimension \(\leq 2\) such that the Galois group \(\text{Gal}(\tau)\) acts on \(T\) and \(\phi\) is \(\text{Gal}(\tau)\)-equivariant. Moreover, it is shown that the converse holds in any dimension.
