The author presents an illustration of Gromov's compactness theorem by understanding singular conics or cubics in \(\mathbb CP^2\) as limits of sequences of tori. He proves the following theorem. Let \(J_0\) be the usual complex structure on \(\mathbb CP^2\) deduced from the complex structure of \(\mathbb C\). (1) Each semi-stable cubic in \(\mathbb CP^2\) is the weak limit of a sequence of \((j_n,J_0)\)-curves where \((j_n)\) is a sequence of complex structures on the torus which converges to the boundary of the space of complex structures on the torus when \(n\) goes to infinity. Each semi-stable cubic in \(\mathbb CP^2\) cannot be the weak limit of a sequence of \((j,J_0)\)-tori where \(j\) is any fixed complex structure on the torus. (2) Each unstable cubic in \(\mathbb CP^2\) is the weak limit of a sequence of \((j,J_0)\)-curves where \(j\) is any fixed complex structure on the torus and also the weak limit of a sequence of \((j_n,J_0)\)-curves where \((j_n)\) is a sequence of complex structures on the torus which converges to the boundary of the space of complex structures on the torus when \(n\) goes to infinity.
