If \(f\colon (X,A) \to (X,A)\) is a map of a pair of compact polyhedra, then the extension Nielsen number \(N(f|\bar f)\) introduced by \textit{R. F. Brown}, \textit{R. E. Greene} and the reviewer [Lect. Notes Math. 1411, 24-45 (1989; Zbl 0688.55002)] provides a lower bound for the number of fixed points on \(X - A\) for all extensions of \(\bar f = f| A\) which are homotopic to \(f\) relative to \(A\). The author studies the relationship between this number and the local Nielsen number \(n(f,U)\) introduced by \textit{E. Fadell} and \textit{S. Husseini} [Ill. J. Math. 25, 673-699 (1981; Zbl 0469.55004)]. He proves, e.g., that if the interior of \(A = \emptyset\), and if \(f'\) is an extension of \(\bar f\) which is compactly fixed on \(X - A\) and homotopic to \(f\) relative to \(A\), then \(n(f'| X - A, X - A) \geq N(f|\bar f)\). He uses some of his methods to extend Anasov's theorem and show that \(N(f, \bar f) = | L(f)| - | L(\bar f)|\) for maps of nilmanifold pairs if \(f\) satisfies two additional assumptions. Two examples are included which show that these two assumptions are necessary.
