The author generalizes some results of the reviewer [Lectures on a method in the theory of exponential sums (1987; Zbl 0671.10031)] on exponential sums and Dirichlet series involving Fourier coefficients of holomorphic cusp forms for the full modular group. In this paper, the main novelty is that the cusp forms in question are related to a congruence subgroup of level \(N\). Then new problems arise if the Fourier coefficients of a cusp form are twisted with an additive character \(\omega(n)=e(nh/m)\). However, the analogy with the previous case \(N=1\) can be retained if \((m,N)=1\) or \((m,N)=N\). The main results are: functional equations for the generating Dirichlet series of such twists, summation formulae of the Voronoi type, transformation formulae for exponential sums, estimates for Dirichlet series associated with cusp forms on the critical line, and estimates for the distance between their consecutive zeros on the same line. Certain Maaß forms are considered as well.
