The authors are concerned with ``the process of the formation of the professional logical community in Russia (\dots) in its relations with the international academia''. Up to 1917 (the time after 1917 is postponed to another article) Russia was largely on the recipient side. There prevailed translations, aims were pedagogical, the logic was philosophical, close to theology and psychology. The overall situation begun to change in the nineteenth century, influenced by mathematicians and closer to their interests, and at the end of the considered period there appeared original contributions to formal logic.
