\textit{D. S. Lubinsky} and \textit{O. Shisha} [J. Approximation Theory 36, 277-293 (1982; Zbl 0504.41020)] have studied rational approximation in a metric that is weighted \(L^ 1\) over the complex plane with the chordal distance between the values of the functions as integrand. In this paper the author studies approximation by rational functions with fixed degree denominators in that metric. The author's main result is that if there is a sequence of rational functions with denominators of degree m converging rapidly to a function f meromorphic with m poles in the complex plane (measured in the metric mentioned) than in fact the only limit points of the poles of the approximating functions are the poles of f and the convergence is locally uniform. He shows that there exist rational functions satisfying the hypothesis if f is of finite order.
