The author studies the version of elliptic cohomology whose coefficient ring agrees with the ring of modular forms for \(SL_ 2({\mathbb{Z}})\) which are meromorphic at infinity. His aim is to construct stable cohomology operations in this cohomology theory which reduce to the Hecke operators \(T_ n\) on modular forms. The introductory and concluding remarks give a good discussion of a number of related problems.
