A monoidal 2-category may have a braiding (pseudo-natural equivalence \(R_{A,B}:A\otimes B\to B\otimes A)\) and then a syllepsis (invertible modification \(Id_{A\otimes B}\Rightarrow R_{B,A} R_{A,B})\). That appears in many recent developments in higher-dimensional algebra, but motivations are more broad. The center of a monoidal 2-category is constitued by objects \(A\) with a pseudo-natural equivalence \(R_{A,-}: A\otimes-\to-\otimes A\) and an invertible modification giving 2-isomorphisms: \(R_{A,X\otimes Y}\Rightarrow(X\otimes R_{A\otimes Y})(R_{A\otimes X}\otimes Y)\). It is a braided monoidal 2-category. In the present paper the 2-center of a braided monoidal 2-category and the 3-center of a sylleptic monoidal 2-category are defined. Explicitely constructed, the preceding generalized centers are giving, respectively, sylleptic and symmetric monoidal 2-categories. Looking at the original center construction, the author corrects some errors.
