The author studies a variational characterization for the first eigenvalue of a Schrödinger problem relative to a strongly local Dirichlet form. Moreover the first eigenvalue has a maximum when the potential \(V\) varies in the set \[ [V\in L^p(X,m): \| V\|_p\leq A], \] and a characterization of the potential that realizes the maximum is given.
