This paper derives a form of the (inhomogeneous) Calderón reproducing formula on spaces of homogeneous type. Since such spaces do not have a translation or dilation structure, the methods rely instead on Calderón-Zygmund operator theory. The main result is as follows. Let \(X\) be a space of homogeneous type, with quasimetric \(\rho(x,y)\) which is comparable to the ball of least volume containing \(x\) and \(y\). Let \(S_k\) be a sequence of approximations to the identity in the sense of \textit{G. David, J. L. Journé} and \textit{S. Semmes} [Rev. Mat. Iberoam. 1, No. 4, 1-56 (1985; Zbl 0604.42014)], where the usual first-order regularity conditions are augmented with the additional (mild) second-order regularity condition \[ S_k(x,y)-S_k(x,y')-S_k(x',y) + S_k(x',y') \lesssim\left ( \frac{\rho(x,x')}{d}\right)^{\varepsilon}\left( \frac{\rho(y,y')}{d}\right)^{\varepsilon} \frac{2^{-k\delta}}{d^{1+2\varepsilon+\delta}} \] whenever the first two terms are sufficiently small; here \(d = 2^{-k} + \rho(x,y)\) and \(\varepsilon\), \(\delta\) are small numbers. Define the difference operator \(D_k = S_k - S_{k-1}\). Then one can find another approximation to the identity (with slightly worse exponents) \(\widetilde S_k\) and a difference-like operator \(\widetilde D_k\) such that one has the reproducing formula \[ I = \sum_{0 \leq k \leq C} \widetilde S_k D_k + \sum_{k > C} \widetilde D_k D_k \] where \(C\) is a constant depending on the \(S_k\). The idea of the proof is to construct an approximate reproducing formula, and show that the error is a well-behaved Calderón-Zygmund operator, which can then be iterated away in certain function spaces.
