The present paper describes the harmonic analysis of the group of isometries of a homogeneous tree. A homogeneous tree of degree \(q\) is a connected graph \(X\) with no loops, in which every vertex is adjacent to \(q\) other vertices. A distance metric between two points of \(X\) is defined as the number of edges between them. Let \(o\) be an arbitrary fixed point of \(X\), and let \(K\) denote the stabilizer of \(o\) in \(G\), the group of isometries of \(X\). \(X\) may then be identified with the coset space \(G/K\). The paper studies a form of the Radon transformation on \(X\) the authors call the Abel transformation and characterize the transforms of radial functions in the Lorentz spaces. They also give a version of the Kunze-Stein principle on \(G\) involving the Lorentz spaces for a locally compact topological group \(H\). The latter principle states that the convolution of \(L^p(H)\) and \(L^2(H)\) is contained in \(L^2(H)\) whenever \(p\) is less than 2 and greater or equal to 1. Finally, the authors use these ideas to study convolution operators on \(L^2(G)\).
