This `tribute' to Maurice A. Biot (May 25, 1905, Antwerp, Belgium -- Sep. 12, 1985, Brussels) shortly describes his academic career (in the USA and in Europe) and his scientific contributions to various fields of mechanics. He is characterized ``as an intuitive engineer, who could master the advanced tools of a physical scientist, and as a scientist who did not lose sight of the physical world'', and the ``level of his work has ranged from the highly theoretical and mathematical to practical applications and patented inventions''. [See also ibid., 4519-4520 (1998; Zbl 0919.01008), review above].
