This paper analyzes the generalized minimal residual method (GMRES) as a solver for coupled finite element and boundary element (FEM-BEM) equations. A two-dimensional linear interface problem is considered; the test and trial spaces for the discrete Galerkin scheme are defined and an algorithm of the GMRES method is presented. To accelerate the convergence of GMRES the hierarchical basis block preconditioned method is used for the piecewise finite elements and the piecewise constant boundary elements. The author concludes that the number of GMRES iterations for preconditioned linear systems grows very slowly with the problem size.
